Mental Health in Hospitality Industry
We have just very recently been made aware of a new charity, Hospitality Health, that has been set up to aid in the hospitality industry, mostly focused around mental health issues.
The purpose of the Charity is about providing signposting and support to staff and students in the hospitality industry who suffer from:
Mental health issues, including depression, thoughts of suicide etc, alcohol addiction, drug addiction, gambling addiction.
The main activities that the charity will become involved in are to support staff and students who are following careers in the hospitality industry. This will be done as follows:
- signposting areas of support for mental health issues,
- promoting good health and wellbeing
- signposting areas of support for gambling, alcohol and drug addiction
- providing training sessions in resilience for young people
Personally, and I am sure many will agree, I think this is a fantastic thing as it has been shown quite recently how badly the hospitality industry can affect those that work within, with Anthony Bourdain taking his own life earlier this year. It is sad that such a thing is what it takes for issues to be recognised but we, as an industry, must strive to improve this and charities such as Hospitality Health can only be a good thing.
